The reason many people do not accomplish their dreams is internal. Studies show that people with higher self-esteem and self-efficacy are more likely to succeed at what they do than those who think they are doomed from the beginning. But why? What is the actual benefit of believing in oneself?
First of all, your mind is your most valuable asset. Try something with me. Close your eyes and imagine yourself relaxing in your “happy place”. What do you feel? Most likely you feel a slight relaxation sweep over you as you picture yourself relaxing. This is because your mind is influencing your behavior. See how that works? You think, it happens.
Now this OBVIOUSLY doesn’t work quite as well in actual situations (for example: I can’t picture my blog writing itself and when I open my eyes, poof!) but it does influence how well you handle an assignment. Is it easier to handle an emergency on a day you are peaceful and happy or on a day you are over-stressed and upset? By mentally preparing yourself for success you put yourself at an advantage over your competitors who don’t take the time to do so.
In today’s uber-competitive business culture, every edge on the competition helps. It basically goes back to the ideas of pessimism and optimism and the “benefits of thinking positive.” It has always been said that if you think positive, you act positive and the same for negativity. As cheesy as it sounds, it really is true. As I said before, the mind is your most valuable (and powerful) asset.
But how can I boost my self-efficacy? First you must realize the value and uniqueness of yourself. What do you have to offer? What can you do others can’t? What is your forte? Now I know it is hard, especially if you are starting with low self esteem, but if you keep trying you will eventually come up with a list.
Now that you have a list of your talents, expound on them. Think of times when they have helped you solve situations at work, helped make your day easier, gave you a sense of accomplishment. Do you feel better yet? Give it time. As you build self esteem you will begin to find life brighter and more interesting. When you feel like you are worth something and have a purpose you tend to enjoy life more which leads to higher productivity. Managers, if you notice an employee getting down and losing focus, compliment them. It will brighten their day and could be just the push they need to get focused on the right track.
